A number of database vendors offer replication as a tool for automating the distribution of data. The low number of sites actually using this technology in production suggests that the problems have not been fully understood or solved. More innovative and robust design principles and concepts that address the true issues of bi-directional synchronization are needed.

To accommodate for large numbers of mobile or otherwise occasionally connecting devices and temporary peaks in the connections, the solution must be able to handle a high number of concurrent sessions and big volumes of data. Another key principle is to maintain the simplicity of the solution without compromising the required functionality. A complicated solution is inherently difficult to use and will therefore never gain popularity. With increasing size of the synchronization hierarchy, systems management becomes a key issue. It must be possible to monitor and manage the various nodes remotely.

The Solid solution is designed to meet these requirements of mission-critical distributed systems with high demands on data integrity and data security at all levels of the system. The solution is based on few concepts, that together address the major issues related to bi-directional synchronization in a way that maintains the simplicity, robustness and performance of the overall business system.
