Move Over, Rsync!

Abstract

In this 45 minute talk, I go over the differences between how rsync and ZFS filesystem replication work, and what the performance implications are --including demonstrating a real-world use case where ZFS replication is more than 1,000x faster than rsync.

The talk mentions my replication tool Syncoid, which makes the actual practice of ZFS replication much, much easier, but focuses more on the bare nuts and bolts of replication itself.

Jim Salter is a voracious open source advocate, technologist, and author. He runs his own business Openoid LCC

Jim first chose open source with FreeBSD and Apache in 1999, and began offering open source solutions professionally in 2002. In addition to a full-time IT consulting business providing open source solutions for a wide variety of clients.

Jim speaks publicly about technology and open source, writes feature articles for Ars Technica and opensource.com, and develops and promotes the Sanoid hyperconverged infrastructure platform.
